Working Party, September 2026

We’ve had 2 work parties in September, the recent rain has revitalised the park and everything is making a last bid to grow before winter. Its wonderful seeing the land turn green again!

September 18th

On the 18th we had a couple of new recruits and tidied up the live hedge at the Cafe and cut back vegetation (lots of nettles!) in front of the Cafe. We also tackled brambles and rose-hip bushes overhanging the walkway at the bottom of the hill near Sainsbury’s entrance which had started to block the path. It was great teamwork and the weather was wonderful!

September 22nd

On the 22nd we were out again enjoying another glorious day in the park and another new recruit to the team. We finished tidying the Cafe in the Park hedge and moved further into the park itself. Dogwood is making a bid to outgrow everything else and left to itself would rapidly colonise all the open areas reducing space for other plants including wild flowers. It spreads quickly underground with long trailing routes so we spent some time ‘popping’; we use a specialised tool to pull them out by the roots. A large area of brambles, equally invasive but much more aggressive with hooking thorns, was also chopped back.

…and Finally

Thanks to the park users who stopped to chat with us and find out more about what we do, we welcome the excuse to down tools for a few minutes and chat in the sunshine. Welcome especially to the couple who are new to the area and loving Beggarwood Park.

Our usual thanks to the Holly Blue who support us with a coffee after our exertions. It was lovely sitting outside in the sunshine and looking down at the park. It really is worth the effort to see it looking so good and people of all ages enjoying it. Our only ask is that you please take your litter home with you, or use the bins provided.
