Dogwood pile arranged as a dead hedge

Working Party, November 2025

Despite it being such a busy time of year, sandwiched between the traditional firework night activities and the not so traditional trick and treating of Halloween, the Beggarwood volunteers still managed to fit in a working party for November, with their numbers swollen by the help of four members of staff from Newbury Building Society.

This month also saw a welcome addition of new member, Lauren, who had attended the successful litter pick on the Sunday before and been tempted to come along.

There were two main tasks on the cards for the day, both regular favourites (?) with the team.

While this was all going on the store was given a much-needed tidy up and clear out after Sunday’s litter pick.

Over welcome cups of complimentary teas and coffee in the Holly Blue, the team agreed that, thanks in no small part to the help of the Newbury Building Society volunteers, all in all it had been a very successful morning’s work.

Team Ditch

Half of the group concentrated on ditch and bank (more Dogwood!) clearing, which for those who haven’t been following previous reports (shame on you!) is done to encourage burrowing solo bees and butterflies to nest.

Team Dogwood

The remaining volunteers then set about the strenuous task of removing Dogwood in the meadow to encourage the growth of native plants (Dogwood is an invasive plant which can suffocate other native plants)
