No Dig Regenerative Gardening, September 2024

On Wednesday 4th September the Beggarwood Wildlife Group hosted a “no dig regenerative gardening” presentation in conjunction with Natural Basingstoke.

The presentation was delivered by two founders of Worthy Earth who are a local company but also have several market gardens across the south of England.

The presentation was held at the Orchard and was attended by various volunteers across the 19 conservation groups within Basingstoke. The photo shows the two presenters from Worthy Earth and some of the volunteers from the Beggarwood Wildlife Group.

So why consider “no dig” gardening? Well in the past it was thought necessary to dig soil, particularly to prepare new beds for growing ornamental plants, fruit and vegetables. Now, scientific evidence shows us that cultivation damages soil structure and disrupts the natural processes that occur within it. This makes no-dig a better choice for soil health by minimising disturbance.

It’s this concept that we at the Beggarwood Wildlife Group are considering using going forward with our community allotment.

Why not come and join us and have fun!
